In January 2024, a round table was held at HSE ART GALLERY on the concept of error selected as the central theme by the curators of the Diploma23 Exhibition by Constantin Adger, Maria Cheloyants and Gosha Golitzin. The moderator of the round table was Daria Pyrkin.
From a purely school-based, student-based interpretation of error as the inevitable «happiness» of the learning process, the curators of the diploma exhibition of students at the School of Design move to discourse about what is (and is) a concept of norm/non-conformance in modern art. And it clearly shows that if all the innovators of their time had acted strictly according to the rules and the canons, there might not have been any development.
Maria Celoianz, Gosha Golitsyn and Konstantin Ager shared their vision of learning and creative error. Their main point is to avoid negative connotations about error, and its progressive importance is underestimated.
Art historian Marina Lopukhova confirmed the curator’s point: most of the artists in history are innovators who, in their work, not only did not follow the usual canons and rules, but often broke them radically.
The philosopher Alexandra Volodin stressed that today’s generation of thinkers is moving away from the problem of finding the true truth. The notion of normativeity is also becoming irrelevant: in a situation of pluralism and respect for individuality, it is extremely difficult to identify, identify and establish a single canon.
The panellists concluded that error is not only an important part of the learning process («lessons learned»), but also a basis for developing artistic thinking. And the art itself, as the exhibitors stated in their concept, is, in fact, «a error in a system based on rationality and utility. It’s a creative intellectual force that works on the fuel of missteps and missteps and produces antibodies to resist old art structures. The artists of history have always broken the boundaries and destroyed the rigid canons. It’s impossible to act strictly by the rules and patterns here. Art gives rise to stereotypical, retrogressive and atheistic thinking and opens up new prospects.
