The designers of the Design Laboratory received a task to propose a concept of the creative public space in the center of Satka. Following the idea of the foundation representatives Art Satka was planned as an attracting point for citizens, a place for rest and enlightment. Art Satka Space is a unique public centre in which any person can come to have rest, to read a book, to meet friends or to work. Art Satka will also hold the town’s educational activities: lectures, master classes and creative clubs.

‘We hope that this place will become an attraction point for all the residents of Satka and its guests. The development and implementation of the project was held during the long-distance work period. But since we already had a certain experience of the distance supervision of the projects in the regions the Laboratory team didn’t experience any difficulties’

The space selected for Art Satka was the former canteen of the South-Ural State University branch. The canteen was connected with the kitchen and auxiliary rooms. The designer and the customer were unique in the opinion that the geometry of the spaces must undergo minimum changes to keep the space volume and lightness. It was also decided to leave the existing non-functioning kitchen hood, old stoves and other objects that were cleaned and painted into bright colors.

The new space has several areas. The central hall is divided by the columns into equal parts and can be transformed for different purposes. The café area with adjacent bar and podium can become a place for a cinema lecture hall. The library space has one common table for reading that is also used for conducting master classes. The booth planning to sell art materials, souvenirs and stationery is installed in the common space. Another podium is aimed for rest, reading and work. Smaller spaces are aimed for special tasks: children room with an attic, room for board games, IT-area with PCs and the area for private work. All the built in furniture was made by the local masters and the paintings made by the artists invited by the customer.
‘The most difficult thing in this project was to keep the balance between keeping the special characteristics of the premises in which the creative space is allocated and the wish to create a modern and attractive place where both children and grown-ups would be going with equal enthusiasm. There was a tense stage of the works linked to the operational decisions on the project under the conditions of restricted repair period but the result deserved it.’
