The third mission of the universities is the cooperation with the society, contribution into its development, social responsibility, position and role in the country and region. The fulfillment of the first two missions — educational and scientific ones, is not possible without the active participation of the university in the surrounding life. The Design Laboratory prepared a report on the implementation of the HSE Third Mission.

The necessity to fulfill the third mission is dictated by the new format of information and communication technologies, social structure and public demands. At the same time, its quality and scale are determined by the quality of the educational and scientific programs of the educational institution, i.e., the first two missions. Thus, the third mission is a natural and necessary way for the university to develop in the modern world. The Higher School of Economics became the first Russian university that started issuing the reports on the third mission.
The report includes 180 projects in 12 areas in which the university is an initiator or partner. In general, these projects include about 1300 online and offline events that involved more than 5 million participants in 2019-2020.

The design of the Third Mission annual report was developed by the Design Laboratory. The design solution was created within the framework of the HSE corporate identity, but with the use of additional colors: for example, the green color of the joint titles is about the broad meaning on the ecological topic, about eco-communication, eco-consumption as the reasonable consumption of various resources.
The concept solution of the annual report also contains two illustrative steps. The first one is geometric patterns — this is about structure and logic, when each section/topic of the annual report is saturated by increasing the number of geometric elements, from one to 12 on the spread, according to the number of sections. The second illustrative style is the semantic plots that reveal the content of each section. The illustrations used a rich color palette, as the themes of the Third Mission are the themes that are rich in meaning. These illustrations were made by Elizaveta Tukacheva, a fourth-year student of the HSE Art & Design School, majoring in animation and illustration.
